Mathematics and Probability Refresher Bootcamp
Audience:
Incoming Statistics and Machine Learning Ph.D. students who are preparing for their fall-semester coursework.
This bootcamp is especially beneficial for those with relatively limited backgrounds in mathematics and statistics.
This bootcamp will help you refresh background material needed to excel in courses like 36-705 ("Intermediate Statistics") and 10-715 ("Advanced Machine Learning").
Purpose:
To help you prepare for your fall-semester coursework, which can be particularly challenging. By offering a series of informal math and probability refresher sessions, we aim to ensure that you are well-prepared to tackle advanced courses with confidence and competence.
Refresher overview:
Participate in a structured yet informal series of refresher sessions designed to reinforce your mathematical and probabilistic understanding.
These sessions focus on building intuition and practical skills through interactive learning, enabling you to settle quickly into your advanced coursework.
Logistics:
- Open to incoming Statistics and Machine Learning PhD students, with an emphasis on those who have less extensive backgrounds in mathematics and statistics.
- All sessions will be conducted exclusively via Zoom, providing flexibility and accessibility.
- Each session will begin with an overview of key topics and intuitions, followed by hands-on practical exercises to solidify understanding.
- Aiming for 8-10 one-hour sessions, ensuring comprehensive coverage of essential topics.
Duration:
Sessions will be held twice a week, with each day comprising 2 hours.
This schedule is designed to balance depth of content with participant availability, resulting in a total of 16-20 hours spread over the bootcamp duration.
